San Miguel High School Amount to be Funded: $575,000 (Debt Reduction)
Project Description: San Miguel High School prepares students from underserved families for college and career by integrating a rigorous academic schedule with practical work experience. Each week students attend four extended class days plus an eight-hour internship day. This approach provides strong educational and career leaning as students develop self-discipline, responsibility, self-direction and pride. Students earn a major portion of their tuition while studying a college preparatory education in a caring community of learners. The school is located in Tucson’s economically depressed south side where 50% of adult residents do not have a high school education, and 40% of the neighbors earn less than $25,000 per year. San Miguel High School recognizes that education is a key element in breaking the cycle of poverty and ending the economic disparities that exist, particularly for minority populations. Many San Miguel graduates return to their neighborhoods with marketable skills that enrich and improve the economic growth of southern Tucson. The $575,000 funding request will reduce debt incurred from building the Student Center. The Center houses the Corporate Internship and Student Life programs. As long as the 24-month time constraint is met, San Miguel has secured dollar-for-dollar matching funds from a private foundation that will double the Angel Charity investment. By eliminating debt, San Miguel’s fund raising efforts will be used to enhance direct service to students.
