Angels Work Miracles
Angel Charity for Children is an all-volunteer organization of dedicated women and men, who believe that together with the many generous donors in our community can make a difference in the lives of the children here, in Pima County. In our 30-year history, Angel Charity has raised over $23 million to fund over 65 local children’s organizations. These dollars have been used to construct new buildings, renovate and expand old ones, fund scientific research, retire mortgages and support much needed programs. Over ONE million children have directly benefited from Angel Charity and our generous donors have funded over the past 30 years.
Angel Charity’s general membership is comprised of up to 150 active members annually. In addition, many long-term Angels choose to continue to support, raise funds and remain involved in Angel Charity as Sustaining or Ten Plus (years) membership status. Membership in Angel Charity is open to all in the community, regardless of race, age or gender. New members are nominated by current members no later than January of each calendar year.
A Mother’s Tribute
Angel Charity for Children, Inc. was founded by a mother motivated to ensure that her child’s short life would have a special meaning. In 1982, after losing her nine year old son Michael to cancer, Louise Thomas invited Jane Loew Sharples to help her form a new organization with a mission to improve the lives of children in Pima County, Arizona. Together, hey recruited 100 individuals – all volunteers, community and business leaders, and friends — who believed in this cause and were willing to make it happen. The initial challenge for this newly formed organization was to raise $205,000, a very daunting task in 1983, to retire the mortgage on the Ronald McDonald House. Not only was the mortgage retired that first year, but the Ronald McDonald House was partially remodeled and expanded. With this initial goal accomplished, Louise and the “Angels” continued to focus on the needs of other nonprofit agencies that provide services to children on an annual basis. Her dream to memorialize the life of Michael Andrew Thomas became a reality and continues today in its 31st year.Louise Thomas Founder
