Who and What is Angel Charity? Angel Charity for Children, Inc. was founded by a mother motivated to ensure that her child’s short life would have a special meaning. In 1982, after losing her nine year old son Michael to cancer, Louise Thomas invited Jane Loew Sharples to help her form a new organization with a mission to improve the lives of children in Pima County, Arizona. Together, they recruited 100 individuals who believed in this cause and were willing to make it happen. All volunteers, the membership included community and business leaders, friends, and those who would become friends, each of whom was committed to the mission of helping children. The initial challenge for this newly formed organization was to raise sufficient funds within two years to retire the mortgage on the Ronald McDonald House, a total of $205,000, a very daunting task in 1983. Not only was the mortgage retired that first year, but the Ronald McDonald House was partially remodeled and expanded, thanks to the efforts of Angel Charity and the generosity of the community. With this initial goal accomplished, Louise and the "Angels" continued to focus on the needs of other nonprofit agencies that provided services to children on an annual basis. Her dream to memorialize the life of Michael Andrew Thomas became a reality and over the past 25 years Angel Charity has raised in excess of $18 million, benefiting 55 agencies whose services to children address such issues as healthcare, education, physical, mental, emotional and sexual abuse, hunger and homelessness, neglect and mentoring, child-care and foster care, drugs, gangs, violence, disabilities, and even recreational and cultural needs.
Angel Charity has been very successful in assisting with capital and program funding over the past 25 years. As we look forward into our 26th year and beyond, we want to thank our many generous supporters in this community. We will continue to hold this mission until all the needs of Pima County's children have been met.
